The sun-drenched heel of Italy’s ‘boot’ is undoubtedly one of the country’s most famous regions, known for its iconic ‘trulli’, baroque architecture and of course, the stunning coastline.
The Apulian coast is characterized by a succession of high cliffs, rocky ravines, secluded coves and sandy beaches. In central Puglia, on the Adriatic coast between Bari and Brindisi, it is possible to experience every type of coast.
From the breathtaking cliffs below the tiny old town of Polignano a Mare, it’s possible to take a boat trip to visit caves accessible only from the sea. Stop to swim at Cala Monachile, a wonderful beach, nestled between two high rocky walls in the heart of the town.
The long sandy beaches of Capitolo are also worthy of a visit, this seaside village in the territory of Monopoli hosts private lidos managed by famous 5 * luxury resorts; stop at Bambu for a treat.
In the territory of Fasano, swimming at sunset along the walls of the ancient Roman city of Egnazia is a unique experience not to be missed.
Along this stretch of coast you can access a range of public beaches, frequented by locals, although "Archeolido" is one of the trendiest beaches at the moment. At Archeolido it is also possible to park for a fee and have direct access to the free beach.
Continuing towards the province of Brindisi, you will come across the coastal village of Torre Canne that has natural hot springs, before arriving to the Natural Reserve of Torre Guaceto, a bird-watching paradise with its wonderful crystal clear waters.
No less enchanting are the beaches along the Ionian coast and from the provinces of Bari and Brindisi are less than a 2 hour drive away. From the white beaches of Marina di Ginosa, to the salt mine and dunes of Torre Colimena, there are so many beautiful places to explore. Make sure to stop off when passing through Marina di Pulsano and Torre Ovo, where transparent waters provide idyllic swimming conditions.
