Among all the Croatian Islands, Hvar is a true trendsetter. The island is stylish and lively, with plenty of incredible bars and restaurants, as well as its picturesque beaches, lavender fields and rich history. 

If you’re planning a trip to Croatia and don’t know where to start, look no further than this guide to all things Hvar. 1. It's one of Europe's sunniest spots

Boasting as many as 2843 hours of sun per year, Hvar is the ideal destination for a sunny escape in Europe. This island is actually the sunniest in the Adriatic, with an annual average of approximately 7.7 hours of sunshine per day, making it a great location for a holiday whether in or out of the high season. So, if you’re looking to get the most of the rays while in Croatia, a visit to Hvar is definitely a must. Though the only way to get to Hvar is by boat, getting from Split to Hvar by ferry or Catamaran is incredibly easy, fast and convenient! The Split to Hvar ferry route is active all year round with plenty of daily connections during the high season, so you’ll definitely have lots of choices for departure times.

3. It's great for exploration

Hvar has many treasures to discover and plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, including the charming fishing villages of Milna, Vrboska, and Zavala, where holidaymakers can truly immerse themselves in local culture. If you’re feeling adventurous, make sure to explore the southern coast’s hidden bays, or hop on a bike and pedal through the island’s lush green landscapes. If the sea is calling your name, why not sail to the Pakleni Islands, just off Hvar’s coast. Bring your snorkel and mask, as the waters are crystal-clear around here, perfect for spotting sea life.


4. It's got a rich history

Although the island is a modern holiday hotspot, thanks to its fabulously contemporary properties and lively nightlife, Hvar is also very historically significant. The island is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the captivating Stari Grad Plain, which has remained almost untouched since it was colonised by the Ancient Greeks in 384 BC. As well as this, the island's strategic location in the centre of the Adriatic has made it an important base for trade throughout history, meaning that there's plenty interesting architecture to see and stories to hear from the locals.

5. It's a foodie paradise

From wining and dining in a traditional 'konoba' to soaking up the seascapes from a glamorous waterfront restaurant, Hvar boasts a fabulous food scene. Seafood lovers are in for a treat, as you'll be able to indulge in delicious local delicacies that are brought in fresh from the harbour each day. During your stay on the island, you’ll sample traditional Dalmatian cuisine, usually seasoned with a generous amount of garlic, spices, herbs and olive oils. To discover the best food on the island, make sure to visit the Old Town. Here, you can fill your plate with Hvar's tastiest traditional delicacies, including Dalmatian Peka and the famous Paprenjak, to truly immerse yourself in the island's culture.
