At the end of a cypress-lined drive, in the hide-away setting of a wooded private estate, this is a large former farmhouse, in a landscape little changed throughout its centuries. Tastefully and artistically restored by the creative owners, Vercenni is now a well-balanced blend of stylish comfort and Tuscan tradition. Bedrooms are furnished with restful, rural simplicity, some with ceiling fans. The entrance hall houses some of the owner's extensive book collection and the heavily beamed sitting room has a huge inglenook fireplace complete with wood-burning stove, along with ample chairs and sofas, Wifi and smart TV, and a wall-wide mural of the estate, juxtaposed with poster-style art and works of art from the artist owners. Occupying much of the lower floor, the cool kitchen/breakfast room is bathed in light from doors and windows and, with its stepped stone floor, has the feel of an outdoor terrace. It opens out to just that, and to panoramic views of hills and valleys from various vantage points in the grounds, where a soft-contoured pool is sunk into lawned surrounds, and a poolside pergola with built-in barbecue is ideal for leisurely lunches. This is an immensely popular villa and large groups have chosen to also take the sister villa Casa di Sopra and dine together on the panoramic terrace at Vercenni. Cook service is an optional extra indulgence

This comfortable, timeless house is just 3km from bustling Radda with selection of eateries, wine shops, a fantastic delicatessan, chemist, playground and other amenities. Guests can enjoy superb local cooking and finest wines at the restaurants in Radda and Siena and at other informal restaurants nestling in the countryside. The speciality food shops both here and in other local villages have a superb selection of these fine wines and other local specialities. The villa is within easy reach of some of the best wine producing estates in Chianti and guests can enjoy tastings at local wineries.  The house is  33km from the sights of glorious Siena. A very comfortable and informal base to enjoy this beautiful region.

About the area

Chianti and South of Siena

Average weather

The hills south of Florence, known as the Chianti, look like most people’s idea of ‘classic Tuscany’. Fortress towns such as Castellina and Radda look out over mile after mile of rolling, vine-clad fields, spotted with Tuscany villas. The region’s major annual festival, September’s Rassegna del Chianti Classico in Greve, celebrates the grape harvest, and signs inviting anyone on a Chianti holiday to a roadside enoteca (wine tasting canteen or shop) are a common sight. The Gothic city of Siena, south of Chianti, is the biggest hill-town of all, with a stash of Medieval art and architecture unmatched in Italy.

But Tuscany still has surprises to offer, and unknown even to many Italians. Maremma, only a two-hour drive southwest of the city of Florence is an extensive and largely undeveloped territory in stark contrast to the compact, ordered Chianti hillsides around Florence and Siena that have, until now, been the major draw for visiting wine lovers. The Maremma has great restaurants, and a treasure trove of new wineries.
